Beginning August 15, Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) will sell its 31-Day Basic GoPass for only $13 ($6.50 discount for individuals 18 years and under, 65 years and older, with disabilities, Medicare Card holders, and veterans). The pass, which regularly costs $95, is a fantastic deal that will continue during construction of the Holman Highway 68 Roundabout.

Reduced pricing will be made available for those who live or work in the following areas: Big Sur (93920); Carmel (93921, 93922, 93923); Carmel Valley (93924); Monterey, west of Sloat Avenue and north of HWY 1 (93940); Pacific Grove (93950); and Pebble Beach (93953). Proof of residency (e.g. driver’s license, state ID card, utility bill) or work site (e.g. current pay stub) must be shown to qualify for the discounted pricing.

The reduced price pass will only be available by visiting MST customer service locations at: the MST Bus Stop Shop in Monterey (201 Pearl Ave), the Marina Transit Exchange (280 Reservation Road), and the Salinas Transit Center (110 Salinas Street).

The deeply-discounted pass is being made available to help alleviate the congestion that is expected to result from the construction of the Holman Highway 68 Roundabout, and to encourage those who otherwise may not regularly ride public transit to try it during periods of major congestion.

In conjunction with the bus pass, the City of Monterey will provide deeply discounted parking at the Downtown Garages. When a customer shows their MST bus pass, they can purchase 20 daily entries to the parking garage for only $20. From the Downtown Garage, people can use their MST bus passes to get around Monterey, New Monterey, and Pacific Grove.

For more information, visit www.mst.org or call Monterey-Salinas Transit toll free at 1-888-MST-BUS1.

Which Monterey Wayfinding Sign Do You Like Best?

Posted on August 8th, 2016 by omba

Between now and Friday, August 26, please take this one question survey to let the City of Monterey know which Wayfinding Sign design you like best!

The City of Monterey is working in collaboration with Hunt Design to update our Wayfinding Signs. This is a very important project as the development of an overall Wayfinding philosophy and graphic standard can provide valuable information and communicate an organized and friendly city, without distracting from its visual beauty.

The Wayfinding Sign Program goals are:

1) Direct and orient users to main destinations

2) Guide first time visitors to destinations efficiently

3) Get drivers parked near destinations and out of their cars to ease congestion

4) Support circulation between destinations for all users (drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians)

5) Unify and refresh public signage throughout the City.

We appreciate your input. Please vote on your preferred design concept!

Thanks to Associate Civil Engineer Andrea Renny, who wrote this article first published in the City of Monterey's City Focus Summer 2016 newsletter.

In early April, the Custom House Store, located inside the Monterey's historic Custom House, celebrated our grand opening. Board members Harish Joshi, Bende Kelly, Jill Lynch, Susan Miller, and Gayle Paul acted as hosts, greeting visitors and giving out small gifts. Musical entertainment was provided by Kevin Hanstick, Terrence Farrell, and Pat Skinner; we thank them for donating their time and talent.

Our new home is bright and well designed, thanks to State Parks architect Mike Zuccaro and the park maintenance staff. The lovely maple cabinets were built by River City Millwork in Sacramento. Funding for them came from a donation to State Parks from the Big Sur Half-Marathon and a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Merchandise in the Custom House Store includes both past favorites and new additions. You’ll still find a fine selection of old-fashioned toys; marbles are a customer favorite. We have blank cards by local artists, featuring pressed flowers, wildflowers, and art from the park collection. We carry Bonny Doon soaps, salves, and essential oils. Papel picado garlands and Chinese tea bricks like those on display in the museum portion of the Custom House are available for purchase. Postcards and magnets with images of historic buildings are popular tourist items. There’s not room to list everything, so you will need to visit and see for yourself.

Our continued success is dependent on the generosity of our volunteer storekeepers, and we always need more. We welcome new storekeepers! If you would like to join us, please contact State Park Interpreter Michael Green by phone at 831-649-7172.
