THE BIKES OF WRATH
Thurs at 7pm

In 2015, five friends from Australia bike from Oklahoma to California - the same route the families traveled in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath. The friends did this on a budget of just $420 (the equivalent to the $18 each family had, on average, when they made the same journey during the Dust Bowl). The friends were overwhelmed by the generosity of the people in the states they biked through. During the documentary's editing process, they realized the trek was more about the people they met than the trek itself. Watch the trailer.

Today is a milestone for Alvarado Street Brewery and Grill. The concept of reviving the heritage Monterey Beer brand (produced 1934-1942) began five years ago before we opened our downtown pub. We found a "cone top" vintage Monterey Beer can from the early 1940's and pondered how amazing it would be to bring it back one day.

About three years ago we officially began the project; along the way, we connected with relatives of the Monterey Brewing Company to hear more about the story of Monterey Beer and its founders, Armin Neubert Sr. and his son Armin Neubert Jr. We went through countless design rounds to ensure the artwork of the can was as close as possible to the original, recalling the days of John Steinbeck and the Great Depression that brought so many to the fertile Salinas Valley.

And as for the beer itself...unfortunately all brewing records were impossible to find, so we settled on an ALL MALT, refreshing light lager that's 4.5% alcohol by volume. A beer that's crisp and dry and perfect for any occasion. Beer flavored beer, if you will.

As for its availability, you've gotta come to the source - Monterey County (for now). We're partnering with many retailers around our area to make this widely available for $8.99 per six pack, and it's also currently available at both our Salinas Tasting Room and Alvarado Street Brewery and Grill at 426 Alvarado Street in Monterey.
