This is what happens when MY Museum's doors are locked due to Covid - they bring the fun outside!!! This extraordinary holiday display outside MY Museum, created by Poptopia Balloons, was set up for MY Museum's "Gingerbread House Extravaganza" - an outdoor pick-up of gingerbread house kits with guest appearances by Monterey Peninsula Ballet Theatre members dressed in their Nutcracker finest. Check out the great photos!

The amazing balloon display continued Dec. 5-9 and everyone was welcome to take a selfie or a fun family pic, start a little walk on the rec. trail, or just drive by and see how magical it was. MY Museum wants to thank Poptopia Balloons for their hard work and incredible creativity.

Monterey County Health Director Edward Moreno has issued a new stay at home order for Monterey County that will go into effective on Sunday, December 13 at 10pm and extend until January 11 at 6am. (This order may be extended depending on ICU availability.)

As of Sunday at 10pm, restaurants and food service establishments will be restricted to pick-up and delivery service only (no outdoor dining); retail shops will operate at no more than 20% capacity; and barbershops, hair salons, and personal services will close (this includes nail and skin care studios and tattoo parlors). Outdoor exercise classes can continue to operate and essential businesses will remain open. Please note that the 10pm curfew also remains in effect.

Currently, Covid-!9 cases are surging in our area following the Thanksgiving holiday. Capacity at CHOMP and regional hospitals has been dangerously reduced here in Monterey and throughout California. Protecting hospital capacity saves lives from an entire range of preventable deaths, not just from Covid-19.

Old Monterey encourages all residents to continue to support small, locally owned businesses during this difficult time. Please use our Dining Guide to see which restaurants and cafes are open for take-out and delivery; shop safely at home using our Gift Ideas Gallery and Shelter-in-Place Mall; and purchase gift cards to support your favorite Old Monterey business owners.

We all know that the next few months will be extremely difficult as we face this surge in Covid-19 cases and we await the coronavirus vaccines. Please remain alert and keep doing the important job of wearing a mask over your nose and mouth, frequently washing your hands, and practicing social distancing. Staying healthy and beating back the coronavirus will save lives, protect our dedicated healthcare workers, and save jobs and businesses. Please do your part.

We at Alvarado Street Brewery were incredibly honored to receive our fourth medal in the past six years for our Mai Tai PA at the 2020 Great American Beer Festival. Usually we enter Mai Tai into the International-style Pale Ale category but changed it up this year into the American Strong Pale Ale category, where it was awarded a Bronze.

We believe part of the secret sauce to Mai Tai is its simplicity and nod towards balance and drinkability. It's always been solely Pilsner malt and Mosaic hops, with moderate bitterness and a clean, dry fermentation. It's not overly hopped either, but just enough for those lush, perfumey aromatics and flavors that have defined this beer over the years. We've also been lucky to forge a relationship with hop growers like Jackson Hop Farms to hand select our Mosaic lots each year, which is essential for consistency and keeping it in spec.

We're stoked to be able to brew Mai Tai PA year round and always have a fresh batch queued up. It's almost always available on burphopsnow.com for shipping, and you'll also find it at Alvarado Street Brewery and Grill at 426 Alvarado Street in Downtown Old Monterey, and throughout Monterey County and Northern California as we've increased its production over the past year.

Thank you so much for your support of Mai Tai over the years, friends! It is most definitely a big part of who we are.

You may have questions about the new Regional Stay at Home Order announced by Governor Gavin Newsom on December 3. Well you're in luck, because KSBW has an easy-to-understand explanation. We recommend you watch the short video and read the text.

As of December 3, Covid-19 regulations on businesses in Monterey will remain the same as they have been recently, but that will change if ICU rates continue to climb in the Bay Area region. We'll post an update if and when that happens. Stay safe, everyone, and please continue to support your locally owned small businesses.
