Isabel, a co-founder of an orphanage in Kolkata, travels to New York to meet a potential benefactor, Theresa. Despite her frustration with the need to justify a charitable donation, she agrees to the meeting, which falls a day before the wedding of Theresa's daughter. Isabel is unexpectedly invited to the wedding and the events that ensue force her to confront decisions she made 20 years ago as well as a man from her past, who turns out to be Theresa's husband. Together they wind through deltas, elude capture, drink whisky, find God, catch fish, and convince Eleanor, a kind nursing home employee with a story of her own, to join them on their journey. Maiden is the story of how Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook in charter boats, became the skipper of the first-ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989. Although blessed with tremendous self-belief Tracy was also beset by crippling doubts and was only able to make it through with the support of her remarkable crew.
