Women Suffrage Campaigners in Monterey County: Presentation by Dennis Mar

On Monday, November 14, 7pm-8pm, the Native Daughters of the Golden West invites the community to enjoy a presentation by Dennis Mar about women suffrage campaigners in Monterey County, fighting for the right to vote. $10 suggested donation. Please RSVP to Wendy Brickman at 831-633-4444.

California women did not have to wait for the 19th Amendment - a women’s suffrage initiative appeared on the 1911 California ballot. This talk will delve into how the women of Monterey County did their part to get the initiative passed. Names popping up include John Steinbeck’s mother and Herbert Hoover’s mother-in-law. Also featured will be Nellie Chope, the first woman to win elective office in Monterey County.

Dennis Mar retired from a career mostly at the Naval Postgraduate School where he worked as a computer programmer and statistician. His research into women’s suffrage combines his interest in local history and voting rights. He is on the board of the Friends of the Pacific Grove Library, a docent at the Point Sur State Historical Park, and a past president of the League of Women Voters of Monterey County.
