Battle of Monterey of 1818: Living History Re-enactment in 2018

This event has already passed

The Battle of Monterey of 1818, a living-history re-enactment, will be held in Custom House Plaza on Saturday, November 17, 1pm-2:30pm. Costumed early Spanish soldiers will defend the Custom House and Captain Bouchard will lead the charge as, cannons firing, his tall ship recreates the only ever land/sea battle on the West Coast. The Argentinian privateer Bouchard’s attack is a revolutionary marker for the opening of California’s land and trade policies to the world with Mexico’s independence from the King of Spain.

Monterey Museum and Cultural Arts Commission is sponsoring a number of festivities today related to this historic 200th anniversary. 10am-11:30am, there will be presentations about the history of Captain Bouchard in Irvine Auditorium at the McCone Building at MIIS. And, once again in the Irvine Auditorium, 3pm-5:30pm, historians will give talks on the battle, featuring entries from some of the soldiers' diaries. All events are free!

The Tall Ship, “The Lady Washington,” will be in the Monterey harbor as part of this year’s festivities. The Battle of Monterey is the only battle in the war of independence of Spanish colonies from Spain to take place on the territory of what is now the USA.
