This event has already passed
Slowfiber presents a class in tatting (antique lace making) taught by Melanie Cervi of the Carmel Crafts Guild. Classes begin on Friday, March 17, 2:30pm-5pm, and continue monthly through May (three sessions total). Fee is $110. Please register on our website.
Lace making is the sweetest and smallest part of our beautiful textile world. The history is rich and varied. Often an afterthought, it sits on the edge of whatever we are wearing, our dish towels. sheets, or underthings. Now, handmade lace reminds us of aunties, grannies, and antique malls. When we put it next to the real thing, we realize commercial lace is awful.
With a bit of thread and a shuttle or tatting needle you can create lace. Because it is so strong, it will wash and dry and iron for decades. Come learn to create tatted lace with a shuttle and/or needle using cotton thread. Melanie will teach the basics of double stitch, show us how to read patterns, and help us discover ways to use the beautiful pieces we create. Our tatting will begin with rings, chains, picots and joins - it's just simple knots, carefully arranged.
