Old Capitol Books: Book Signing by Joaquin Barreto, Author of "El Otro Lado"
This event has already passed
Author Joaquin Barreto will be at Old Capitol Books on Friday, April 20 at 4pm for the launch of the Spanish version of his book, El Otro Lado (The Other Side): An Immigration Story.
This book is a very personal narrative on immigration, overcoming culture shock, and assimilating into the U.S. Barreto takes the reader through various stages of transition, from country to country, from childhood to young adulthood, and more. The descriptions of rural Mexico are felt by the reader: the scenes, the scents, the traditions, and the culture that seems to evaporate as new traditions are adopted with the false assumption of becoming more American.
Joaquin Barreto was born and raised in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico. He migrated to Santa Cruz, California at the age of 18, quickly falling in love with the new city. Working full time and sometimes two jobs at the same time, he attended adult education classes to learn English, eventually attending Cabrillo College where one of his teachers encouraged him to continue writing his childhood memories. He has two children from his first marriage that ended in a divorce. Joaquin is now re-married with four children and still living in Santa Cruz, California.
