Guide to Shopping in Old Monterey

Shop in Old Monterey...
the Peninsula's Downtown

Historic downtown Old Monterey - the Peninsula's Downtown - has it all: shopping, dining and entertainment. Along with a unique variety of shopping there is a wide selection of restaurants from which to choose. There are more than 50 eating establishments within easy walking distance. The Downtown is easy to get to by public transportation or by car. There is convenient street parking, and public garages are located in Downtown Monterey. (See "Parking" under "Visitor Services" on our Website.) Validated parking is also available behind many businesses.

As the historic heart of the state, where California was born, Old Monterey is emerging as the cultural center of the Monterey Peninsula. Downtown is the home to many historic Adobes, the Monterey Museum of Art, the Maritime Museum, the Monterey State Hisoric Park and Pacific Museum, the Monterey Conference Center, theaters, billiard and dance clubs, the Monterey Sports Center and other entertainment activities. (Click on our "Cultural & Historic Old Monterey" Link.

We are also home to the Tuesday night Old Monterey Market Place farmers' market, the most successful weekly event on the Peninsula, featuring live entertainment, fresh produce, baked goods and crafts. Held on Alvarado Street and Bonafacio Place, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Winter, and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Summer. Old Monterey is 12 miles west of Highway 101. Take Highway 156 to Highway 1 to the Monterey/Fisherman's Wharf exit. Follow the signs to Downtown. Any time is the right time in Old Monterey! Downtown Shopping and Dining Guides are available by request. The businesses listed in this guide are members of the Old Monterey Business Association (OMBA). Please call 831/655-8070.
